[8-09-2005] As many people know the Space
Shuttle Discovery landed safely at Edwards Air Force base this morning at
5:12 AM. The Shuttle had a soft glow about it and no visible running lights.
However, what I heard and saw come in from space prior to the reentry of
Discovery Shuttle really made me curious. There was not only a streak, like
a "shooting
star",
but also a small sonic boom at about 4:52 AM, approximately a quarter of
an hour before the NASA Shuttle appeared in the sky above. Was this perhaps
another spacecraft coming in from space or was it just a "shooting star"?
The doubtless mind has to wonder if a meteor shower is not the
perfect cover for the covert reentry of spacecraft. These days you never
know, but it is in fact the month of August and after a little bit a good
old fashioned internet research I think I've found our culprit: the annual
Perseid meteor shower when the earth passes through the orbit of the
Swift-Tuttle Comet. Coincidentally the Perseid meteor shower is strongest
between August 9th (today) and is at its peak on August 12th between
2:00 AM and dawn looking East. I'll be watching! |
